The Olivetti Historical Archives
By Eugenio Pacchioli
English translation by Jane Simpson
|
In this new institutional form, the Olivetti Historical Archives were
officially opened in October 1998, on the occasion of the ninetieth anniversary of the
Olivetti company.
But what do the Olivetti Historical Archives contain? How are
they organised?
Broadly speaking, the structure consists of:
- a People Archive, containing material on the key entrepreneurial figures in the
Olivetti Family
(Camillo, Adriano, Massimo, Dino, Roberto, Arrigo and Others);
- an Olivetti Company Archive,
an extremely large collection of documents produced by the various Olivetti companies, centres, divisions and
departments;
As Olivetti's history and achievements, the people associated with it and the general
background suggest, in quantitative terms alone, the Olivetti Historical Archives constitute
a heritage of unlimited dimensions, and not just for the local community. They do however
require further and immediate action to improve their management and utility, as well as a
full-scale classification programme backed by an equally solid commitment to integration
and retrieval.
An Archive inside the future
The latest in the series of transformations faced by the Olivetti company in its almost
one hundred years is so recent that it is still underway. It is a change that has shaken
the old ties between the company and the Canavese to such an extent that many fear an
outright separation, an irretrievable rupture.
In this situation, the Olivetti Historical Archives can act as a fresh point of
contact, the interface for a possible new and constructive relationship. The company's
historical development, and in part the interpretation of and background to the Olivetti
story, the network of ties with the territory, an enduring cultural wealth, a style that
extends beyond the corporate dimension: these and many other elements in the Olivetti
Historical Archives can provide the basis for the construction or accumulation of new
forces to stimulate the growth of the company.
To encourage new creativity rather than erect an embittered monument to the past.
In short, the Olivetti Historical Archives could act as a cultural nucleus for
the territory as it rethinks the potential of its public and private components and plans
their transition towards new scenarios.
Although further work is needed on the management and use of the Olivetti Historical
Archives, their function as a cultural nucleus is reflected in a series of
projects planned by the Institutions and by the Olivetti company in particular.
So the end of the century and the move into the new millennium see opportunities for an
important corporate heritage to be employed to foster new creativity and development. To
release repressed energies and spur important new strategies.
With these objectives, a complex alliance of public and private bodies has concrete plans
to set up a series of new facilities. A high-level university centre, an industry park for
new enterprise, a cultural centre, an environment integrating the achievements of the past
and important examples of modern rationalist architecture.
As a possible cultural nucleus, the Olivetti Historical Archives is
already part of this exciting project. The roots of the past as an embryo for the future.
