Periodicals Library
These historic journals – the adjective is used advisedly, since several of the reviews occupy a significant place in twentieth-century cultural history – can be found in the Periodicals Library of the Olivetti Historical Archives. They include SeleArte, Urbanistica, Zodiac, Metron architettura, Tecnica ed Organizzazione, Sapere, Comunità. Some of them received the support of Edizioni di Comunità simply to help them overcome momentary difficulties.
According to Cesare de Seta, periodicals like SeleArte and Zodiac were vital tools for communicating with the world and, after years of autarky, for helping Italian arts and culture to connect with the world on an equal, complex-free footing (Quaderni, Milan, no. 7/8, April/September 1991).
As a vehicle for the ideas promoted by the Edizioni di Comunità publishing house, Comunità, the magazine founded in 1946, examined a huge range of fundamental political and cultural issues. The Edizioni di Comunità catalogue (Milan, 1964) observes: the information … is always the result of detailed research by specialists of great intellectual integrity. Each issue of the magazine offers extensively illustrated articles and essays on politics, economics, sociology, literature, the figurative arts, architecture, town planning, bibliographic reviews, surveys.
It is no exaggeration to say that in terms of contributors, circulation and subject-matter, Comunità was one of the most authoritative journals in Europe.
A smaller section in the Periodicals Library is dedicated to the company's in-house publications. The term "house organ" is often used disparagingly, as if such publications were sub-products of the more noble class of journals or periodicals.
